Golden seal, often called the King of mucous membranes, is traditionally used to help soothe the mucous membranes that line the respiratory, digestive and urinary tracts.

Golden Seal has traditionally been used in fighting mild upper respiratory infections and to relieve the symptoms of colds. It is a Traditional Western Herbal Medicine home remedy taken at the onset of colds to help aid the body’s resistance capability and to soothe irritated mucous membranes. The berberine content of Golden Seal is responsible for its golden colour and antiseptic properties.
Golden Seal has been written about from the 16th century when pioneers encountered Native Americans chewing it for their mouth ulcers. Golden seal has anti-inflammatory, astringent and immune supporting properties attributed to the naturally occurring alkaloids hydrastine and berberine. It is most useful when taken at the first sign of respiratory symptoms or colds.
